Michael Barnaart
Miffy Brooch
From now on, the world’s most famous rabbit will also have an iconic design by Michael Barnaart in her wardrobe. As an enameled brooch, Miffy wears the Mondrian dress.
‘I think those stripes are nice too / I think they’re really good / but I don’t know exactly / how or if I should look’, Miffy once said. She is a lover of Piet Mondrian’s work. As is Michael Barnaart, who in turn is a fan of Dick Bruna’s most famous creation. With a brooch of Miffy in his famous Mondrian dress, the fashion designer brings about a logical but unique encounter between two of the most influential artists in the modern Dutch design tradition.
‘Dick Bruna’s work is among my earliest childhood memories; Miffy hung above my bed as a poster,’ Barnaart says. “The apparent simplicity, strong lines and vibrant colors are important inspirations for my designs. These same elements later struck me in Mondrian’s work.” When his Mondrian dress took the world by storm at international exhibitions in 2011, the designer wrote to Bruna to thank him for his inspiration. ‘His handwritten response hangs in my tower room,’ he gloats. “Since then, a collaboration with Miffy was high on my wish list. This collector’s item is accompanied by a nice gift box.
