This keyboard instrument has held a central position in professional and domestic music since the latter part of the 18th century. The piano made its first appearance in the early 1700s in a highly developed form and as the result of the work of a single individual— Bartholomeo Cristofori, keeper of the instruments at the Medici Court in Florence.
